Now that we have Christmas behind us, we can move on to the next holiday – Valentine’s Day! I consider this more of an excuse to buy fabric than a real holiday since it has evolved from its pagan roots to an overblown commercial extravaganza. Again – not that I mind retail frenzies, as long as they involve fabric!
I thought I’d find a themed project for anyone looking to put last year behind them and strike out with something new.
Cross my heart by Amy Butler is an adorable pieced quilt that finishes at a whopping 85″x89″. This quilt can be made with fat quarters although you will need to somewhat disregard the cutting instructions, which are designed for a skinny fat quarter. I think that you should be able to use the diagram below – with the shaded areas being the extra fabric cut for the fabrics that the pattern calls for 1/3 of a yard.
The construction method is somewhat unique in that the piecing creates a plus which is then trimmed to an X. This is a somewhat different method than what I used in my All My X’s quilt, but the results are great.
I also like the dark background on this quilt, which allows the saturated colors to glow. My favorite saturated background color is the Bella Horizon blue by Moda but a neutral like the Bella Graphite gives you a strong unifying force without quite so much eye strain.
Have a wonderful weekend!
