I’m a sucker for half square triangle quilts, so it’s fortunate that there’s no shortage of beautiful patterns that use this versatile block. In some ways, it’s strange that I love the block because it’s almost the exact opposite of what I love about quilting – it requires PRECISION in order to get everything to line up and the symmetry is an important part of the beauty of the finished quilt.
Of course, you can always foundation piece a HST, and I love the multiple at a time templates. Have you ever used one? My favorite is a variation on the following diagram:
I make them a little large and trim them down for final perfection. Well, almost perfection!
Once you have your construction plan in place, you’re ready for this week’s free pattern, brought to you by Riley Blake. As instructed, the quilt finishes at 88×88, which is a wonderful size. An extra column or two or another border and you can easily make it into a king size quilt!
It’s all solids as designed, but since the HSTs finish at 4″, you can easily mix in a few (or a lot) of patterns. I would also swap out the white background for something with more pep, but that’s really a personal preference and definitely depends on what your other choices are.
Enjoy the pattern, and have a great weekend!
